Collegiate Coaches
John R. Hutton
Coach John “J.R.” Hutton has coached Men’s Volleyball at Division III D’Youville College (DYC) since 1997. He has compiled an incredible overall record of 133-39 (.775). His men’s program has made three consecutive appearances in the N.C.A.A. Division III Final Four Championships.
From 2000 to 2007, he was Head Women’s Volleyball Coach at D’Youville College, and led them to the Conference Championship, earning him the “Upstate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year” award. Coach Hutton was named “NECVA Conference Coach of the Year” in 1999, 2000, 2006, and 2007. He has led D’Youville College to over 300 victories (combined) in Men’s and Women’s Volleyball.
Coach Hutton played varsity volleyball at Orchard Park High School and later at Springfield College. He has been on staff for 18 years.

Cathy Hummel
Coach Cathy Hummel has been Head Coach of the Canisius College Women’s Volleyball since 2000. She is the program’s winningest coach with 101 career victories. During the past three seasons, Canisius has had a 50-38 overall record (.568), which is the best three-year stretch in program history. The Golden Griffins have recorded 36 victories against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponents. Hummel earned the MAAC Coach of the Year award twice in her career. In 2008, her team qualified for a four-team MAAC Tournament for the first time since 1993.
A 1991 graduate of Hofstra University, Hummel was named MVP at the ECAC Championships in 1988 and 1990. Prior to playing at Hofstra, Hummel attended James Madison University for two seasons and was named the Colonial Athletic Conference MVP in 1987. She was selected to the Wall of Fame at James Madison University in 2000.
Hummel served as a head coach for the Cheetah Volleyball program from 1995-2003. She won two gold medals at the 2003 Empire State Games in Buffalo, one as a coach and one as a participant. She also accomplished this feat at the 2001 Empire State Games as well.
